The Essex National Heritage Area is a 550-square mile area between the Atlantic Coast and the Merrimack Valley. It includes the thousands of historic sites and districts that illuminate colonial settlement, the growth and decline of the maritime industries, and the development of the shoe and textile industries. The Area also features historic seaports and New England town commons, industrial mills and pristine beaches, renowned museums and wildlife refuges, working farms and inviting natural trails. Directions
Plane - The Heritage Area is served by Logan International Airport in Boston. The Heritage Area begins only seven miles north of the airport.
Car - The Heritage Area is served by a good road system. The major highways are I-93, I-95, and I-495 and routes 1 and 128. There are also a number of scenic roads through the area and along the shore.
Public Transportation - Commuter rail runs from Boston's North Station. The Rockport and Newburyport lines make several stops within the Heritage Area. Buses to Salem run from Haymarket Square in Boston.
