Halibut Point State Park

If you are in Massachusetts, and you are looking for something to do for the weekend, check out Halibut Point State Park. It is a beautiful coastal seascape located in Rockport, Massachusetts. If you are lucky, and it is a clear day, you can see Crane Beach, Mount Agamenticus and the Isle of Shoals. This former quarry is the perfect destination if you want to experience the serene beauty of the east coast.

History

Halibut Point is made up of sheets of granite that date back 440 million years. Due to the presence of this rock and the fires that occur quite often, there is little to no vegetation. Many wildflowers do pop up during the spring, and in the winter there are many sea birds that feed in the ocean nearby. Starting in the 1840s, a quarry business was established to mine the granite. After the granite industry collapsed in the area, the quarry was sold and is now a national park.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day the park is open from 8am to 9pm daily. The park is located on Gott Avenue, Rockport, Massachusetts, 01966.

Amenities and attractions

There are restrooms, a visiting center, fishing, a picnic area, scenic views, walking trails and cross country skiing areas from which to choose. Plus, it is a great place to go birdwatching in the winter months.
